Empowering Iowans of faith and conscience to take bold and just climate action.

A message from our executive director, Deaconess Irene DeMaris

Is It Spring Yet?

A few weeks ago, when it was in the 50s and sunny on the weekend, my spouse and I went to purchase my first road bike. It was the perfect day to check out bikes and take them for a test spin in the parking lot. When we got home, we did a quick ride around the neighborhood and then the temperature dropped and we got more snow. Since then, my new road bike has been stuck in the garage waiting for the season to change. We’re ready for spring, yet the forecast has not been in our favor.

Winter is a season of preparation and waiting, sometimes impatiently. I don’t know how many times I ask myself, “Is it spring yet?” while planning my week and looking at what I should wear to work. Winter can be difficult; so much is happening underneath the surface that we don’t see. Sometimes we forget that since we cannot see the fruits of our labor, but they are there awaiting to spring forth.

In the midst of preparation, Iowa IPL has had a very active few weeks:

  • Nearly 100 supporters took climate action by letting their state representative know that they do not support HF 662 (HSB 126) because it does not let Iowans thrive. There is still time to take action, so send a message today!
  • We ran Faith Farms & Climate in Atlantic and Earlham, introducing more farmers and faith leaders to the work we do. Read the latest Faithful Farmer profile to get inspired.
  • Earth Day is right around the corner! We want to highlight all of the great events happening on our website, social media, and email promotions. Please email rmatson@iowaipl.org with your event details and a photo to get listed! (Stay tuned for Iowa IPL’s Earth Day Eve event, to be announced soon at iowaipl.org/events.)
  • We are starting to receive Called to Climate Action student leadership applications and getting excited for that work this summer. There is still time to apply, so please spread the word!

Maybe the question isn’t “Is it spring yet?”, but rather, “Are you ready to spring forward with Iowa IPL?” I hope you are! (And so is my bike.)

Solar For Faith Communities

Warming up to the idea of going solar? Installing solar at your house of worship is a great way to make the move towards embracing a clean and dependable way to power our communities.

Faithful Farmer: Maggie McQuown

I have grown to realize that while I technically “own” my farm, none of us truly “own” the land. We are merely caretakers of the land for the short span of our lives. My faith makes me appreciate how vast, diverse, complex, and miraculous life on Earth is.
