A message from our associate director, Irene DeMaris “Feel your feelings” & Take Climate Action Last week the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published their Sixth Assessment Report. I sat down with coffee on Monday morning to start reading , looking at the data and the articles on the report when a typhoon of sadness hit me, making it hard to breathe. It’s one thing to know that things are not moving in the right direction, but this report had graphs and cutting edge climate science begging us all to move quicker. As one of my seminary teachers often said, “Feel your feelings.” Hold your sadness, anger, frustration, despair to move through it into climate action. The report gives us five potential futures based on greenhouse gas emissions and other human factors. However, we have reached the point where our sea levels will continue to rise and our glaciers will keep melting. That is something to pause and mourn. Our world is playing a new “choose your own adventure” with the stakes at life or death. As a person of faith and conscience, I am going to hold my hope by working towards accomplishing the first future. | |
