Empowering Iowans of faith and conscience to take bold and just climate action.

A message from our rural faith organizer, Elston Tortuga

Cultivating Inclusive Community, Fighting for Supportive Policy

This past March, Iowa IPL held Faith Farms & Climate meetings in Harlan, Red Oak, Earlham, and Atlantic. We gathered farmers of faith to discuss their connection to faith and how it calls them to agriculture, as well as to faithful climate action. We also heard from rural faith leaders about the unique joys and challenges of rural faith leadership and the role of rural faith leaders in responding to the climate crisis. All told, we heard from 75 faith leaders and farmers, and picked up on some common themes throughout the eight conversations:

Climate action is a moral imperative

Lack of rural infrastructure and government support

An uncertain generational transition

Concern for Iowa’s public health and food security

Building community across difference is difficult

Faithful Farmer: Hannah Breckbill

Growing up Mennonite gave me a lens that sees *community* as the place where God expresses themself and where we can build the world that the Creator intended. Farming gives me a clear role in community, and an opportunity every day to notice and give thanks for the communities of life in this place.

Your financial support empowers Iowans of faith and conscience to take bold and just action on the climate crisis. Together we are transforming our communities, our state, our country, and our world.
